Roux-en-y Gastric Bypass
Decrease (-) Restore Default Increase (+) Font Size

Roux-en-y is the leading choice of gastric bypass procedures. It is the most commonly performed weight loss surgery procedure in the U.S.

This surgery involves first creating a small vertical stomach pouch of less than one-ounce capacity. Then a bypass of most of the stomach and some of the small intestine is created.

The bypass helps you lose weight because:

  1. the stomach pouch is quite small (less than 1 ounce)
  2. the outlet from the pouch is quite small, so you must eat slowly
  3. after a bypass, patients tend to stay away from sweets
  4. interrupting the satiety center causes you not to be hunger for eight to 10 months.
